Sport at Wheeler Heights

At Wheeler Heights Public School, students in Years 3–6 have the exciting opportunity to represent their school in weekly competition against eight schools across our Network. Competing in both summer and winter sports, students develop teamwork, resilience and a healthy competitive spirit while building lasting friendships beyond the classroom. Positions on teams are through a selection process and with junior and senior divisions available, every student competes at the right level, gaining confidence, school pride and a love of sport. Beyond regular competition, students can also experience the thrill of gala days and State Knockout competitions across a variety of disciplines, opening the door to even greater sporting achievement.

Wellbeing

At our school, student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. Our Wheeler Way and Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework keeps our whole community focused on being kind, respectful and responsible. In Year 5, our popular Dancesport Confidence Program combines ballroom dancing with the development of essential life skills, building resilience, teamwork, respect and confidence in a fun and memorable

way. Together, these programs ensure our students thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

Trips and excursions

Our students enjoy getting out of the classroom to explore, learn and try new things. These experiences help them grow, build confidence and see how their learning connects to the world.

School Leadership

At Wheeler Heights Public School, leadership is an integral part of our school culture. With a variety of roles available, from School Captains to Library Prefects, there is an opportunity for every student to step up and make their mark. Students in Year 5 undertake a dedicated leadership program that builds the skills, confidence and character needed to lead with purpose and integrity. Our student leaders take on real responsibility across the school, including: running assemblies, presenting to the community, leading their House groups and supporting the day-to-day life of the school. Through these experiences, students graduate from primary school as capable, confident and community-minded young leaders.

Student Voice - The Wheeler Wonderers

Our Student Voice Team known as ‘The Wheeler Wonderers’ gives students a genuine say in the life of their school. Open to students in Years 3–6 who demonstrate strength in the social and emotional domain, the group meets regularly to discuss ideas, collaborate on projects and drive meaningful change that improves school life for every student. Through this experience, students develop leadership, empathy and a deep sense of responsibility - learning that their voices matter and that they have the power to make a real difference.

Public Speaking

At Wheeler Heights Public School, students in Years 3–6 have the opportunity to represent their school in the Multicultural Public Speaking competition, while our K–6 Young Communicators program provides a supportive stage-based competition that builds confidence and communication skills from an early age. Our annual Spelling Bee is always a highlight of the school calendar, a fun and spirited event where school winners go on to compete against students from other schools, taking their skills to the next level.

Enrichment Opportunities

We are committed to extending and challenging students identified as having high potential through a range of enrichment opportunities. We offer a variety of regular enrichment lessons in writing, numeracy and maths problem solving for students from Years 1-6, as well as one off special days for gifted artists. Our cross-school enrichment day brings together talented students from across our neighbour public schools, offering exciting opportunities in a wide variety of areas from debating and science to creative arts and beyond. These experiences inspire our students to reach further, think deeper and discover just how much they are capable of.

Dance

Dance is a vibrant and celebrated part of our school community. With five performance groups, including: senior lyrical, junior jazz, combined jazz and two boys dance groups, students have the opportunity to develop their skills, artistry and confidence in a supportive and passionate environment. Our dancers perform at a variety of eisteddfods including the Sydney Opera House and local dance festivals, giving students unforgettable experiences and a deep love of the performing arts.

Combined School Musical

At our school, students in Stage 2 have the opportunity to be part of the Department of Education Arts Unit’s Combined Schools Musical. Performed with a full cast of actors and performers, students get a taste of what it truly means to be part of a large-scale professional musical production. Past productions include Shrek (2025) and Mary Poppins (2026), giving our students memories and experiences that last a lifetime.

Band

At Wheeler Heights Public School, students from Year 3 are invited to be part of our outstanding school band program. This program is open to all students regardless of musical experience or ability. With three ensembles to progress through -training, intermediate and senior, students develop musicianship, discipline and a genuine love of music at every level. We also have a spectacular Jazz band for interested students. From school performances to events across the local area, our band students enjoy incredible opportunities to shine and share their talent with the wider community.

Drama & Choir

Our choir and drama groups offer students a joyful and creative outlet to express themselves, build confidence and develop their performing arts skills. Open to students across the school, these vibrant groups come together throughout the year in a warm, fun and supportive environment. The highlight of the year is our annual Wheeler Spectacular - a truly memorable event where choir and drama students take centre stage and share their talents with the whole school community.
