Science Week 2020

Students during Science Week at WHPS

SCIENCE WEEK - 2020

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. This year it runs from 15-23 August. The school theme of National Science Week 2020 is Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans. The theme embraces the innovative technologies, capabilities and skills needed to achieve economic, environmental and social sustainability of our oceans. It features insights and inquiries into workable solutions that generate healthy oceans, healthy economies and healthy communities.

Throughout the week students and teachers have been involved in many activities based around this theme. The Coastal Environment Centre ran ZOOM learning conferences which many classes participated in. 4E learned that a blue whale can grow up to 30 metres long so they went out to the oval and measured 30 metres to be able to visualise the size! They all agreed it is ginormous! Sustainability is extremely important to our students so they embraced this year’s theme enthusiastically. Learning how they can assist in the preservation of our oceans for the future is particularly significant to them. I’d like to thank Mrs Miller, Ms Hammond and Mrs Josephs, our wonderful science teachers, for organising many terrific activities for all classes to participate in and for decorating the library in the theme of the week. I’m sure you’ll agree it looks amazing!
